Richard Hofstadter

Richard Hofstadter

American political historian (1916-1970).  Born in Buffalo.  Professor Hofstadter, who spent most of his career at Columbia University, was widely read by both professional historians and interested amateurs.  His most popular book, American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It (1948), is an ideological biography of prominent American politicians through the beginning of the twentieth century.

Professor Hofstadter won a Pulitzer Prize in history for The Age of Reform from Bryan to FDR (1955), which argues that American political reformers habitually revert to antiquated eighteenth century ideals.
