Rothschild: A Famous German Jewish Name

The name Rothschild was connected with wealth.  Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1743-1812) was born in Frankfurt am Main (on the Main) in Germany.  He was the son of Moses Amschel Bauer, who worked as financier and goldsmith.  The Rothschild name was originated from the Red Shield that was suspended over the entryway of their shop (as was often the case in those years, people were named or identified with their business, their trade or profession - my father was identified in his town as the Schuh Adler since he owned a shoe store).

Mayer Amschel Rothschild worked at the Hanover Bank as a clerk. The Hanover Bank was owned by the Oppenheimers.  Mayer achieved the stature of a junior partner in a bank founded  by his father in 1750. He left the Hanover Bank to take possession of the business his father had founded.  He purchased and sold rare coins, and later was successful in obtaining and purchasing the businesses of a number of other coin dealers.  He diversified his business to include antiques and wineries and became an importer of  manufactured goods from England.  It was at this time that the Rothschild family began  to accumulate an  enormous fortune.

In the year 1769, Mayer Amschel Rothschild had become an agent for the court of Prince William IX of Hesse – Kassel (Prince William was the grandson of George II, and also a cousin to George III, who was a nephew to the King of Denmark and also a brother in law to the King of Sweden). Prince William handed his wealth to be managed by the Rothschilds.

Emerging conditions were soon to allow the Rothschilds to devise a plan that would assure them the complete control of European finances, with ambitions to control the world.  Rothschilds also managed to have complete control of the British economy, after setting up a new Bank of England, which Nathan Rothschild controlled.  In 1818 the Rothschild Family  purchased enormous French government bonds and ultimately procured control of France.

In summary: The Rothschild name is known today as having been one of the richest families in the world.  They believed in keeping their brilliant business acumen within the family.  They knew finances like no other; they made contacts with important people, kings, politicians, financiers and other knowledgeable and successful personages to rise as the financial rulers of their territories.  The Rothschild name is known wherever the topic of  wealth is mentioned.
