1967
It is common for the
enemies of the Jewish people to pretend that Israel has seized so-called Arab
land on the West Bank of the Jordan solely to aggrandize itself at the expense
of the “Palestinians”, a people that never was and never will be.
The truth is quite
otherwise and cannot be altered by liars seeking to rewrite history to serve
their hateful ends. Like their idol Hitler before them, the Arab haters hold the
view that a lie told over and over again will finally be accepted as a fact.
Yet, here are the facts.
During all the years from
the day of Israel’s independence on May 15, 1948 to this day, Israel was
always willing to negotiate a reasonable settlement with the Arabs surrounding
them on all sides. Yet, in 1967 as before and now, the Arabs spoke only of the
annihilation of all Jews, wherever they might be. Then, as now, the Arabs
terrorized the civilian Jewish population in Israel. It is a gross lie to
pretend that the current and recent terror was caused or is provoked by the
so-called Jewish “settlements”. There are no “settlements” at all.
The liars claim that a Jew born in Judea is a “settler” but an Arab born in
Detroit is a native “Palestinian”.
Then as now, terrorists
operated from the Arab held land surrounding Israel. For example, in 1965
thirty- five terrorist attacks were made against Israel. Israel was not then in
possession of Judea and Samaria. In 1966, forty-one terrorist attacks were aimed
at Israeli children and in the first four months of 1967, 37 such attacks
continued the terror. All before Israel rescued itself from another Holocaust in
June of that year.
Even as the terrorists
murdered civilians inside Israel, the Syrian cowards used Soviet armor to
bombard Israeli towns and villages in the Galil from the 3000 ft high Golan.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian
dictator Nasser was screaming that he would invade Israel and drown the land in
Jewish blood. Nasser also appointed a number of German Nazi murderers left over
from the Hitler era to develop mobile gas ovens to slaughter the Jews he hoped
to conquer.
At the same time, Syria
promised “a battle of annihilation” against Israel, a battle to be joined by
Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iraq and their friend the Soviet Union.
The Soviets handed the combined Arab forces immense war supplies including
tanks, planes, guns etc. The Egyptians alone had 250,000 troops in the Sinai
with 2,000 tanks and 700 planes.
Because of their enormous
superiority in men and equipment the Arabs were sure they could slaughter even
the last baby in Israel. Meanwhile our president, Lyndon Johnson, imposed an
arms embargo on Israel so that Israel received no weapons from anyone -
certainly not from the Europeans, who then and now are craving another
Holocaust.
Meanwhile Johnson declared
that the U.S. was “neutral” as to the coming war. This meant literally that
he didn’t give a damn if all Israel were slaughtered.
On May 22, 1967 the
dictator Nasser closed the Strait of Tiran to Israeli shipping and to all ships
bound for Israel, no matter what nationality. Take a look at the map. The strait
of Tiran is a narrow inlet between Saudi and Sinai. At its end is the Israeli
port of Eilat. There are two islands in the strait so that it is easy to close
the waterway. Closing any area to any shipping is an act of war and the
Egyptians said so.
War seemed inevitable now
and the world was enjoying the coming Holocaust. Tourists left Israel. The
media, as usual on the Arab killer side, were predicting the slaughter of the
last Jews who had survived the European atrocities only one generation before.
Everyone knew it. Israel was finished. In the United Nations unity existed as
always. All were united in condemning Israel and “rubbing their hands” in
anticipation of more Jewish blood.
And then, it happened. To
the consternation of the world which “knew” that Jews can’t fight and that
Jews walk silently into the nearest gas oven, the Israeli air force struck on
June 5, 1967. In one day, Israel wiped out the Egyptian air force. On that same
day Jordan attacked Jerusalem only to find that its defenders could and did
fight. Then and there Israel and the Jewish people liberated Jerusalem from its
enemies and entered the Holy City to the sounding of the Shofar.
Even the Golan was
liberated from Syrian control within six days as the Egyptian army surrendered
in the Sinai and Israel reached the Suez Canal on its way to Cairo, Damascus and
Amman.
This great victory
prevented another Holocaust to the disappointment of the Europeans, the United
Nations and of course the Arab haters. Yet, it came at a terrible price. Israel
lost 115 men on the Golan alone. This is the same as the number of Americans
killed during Desert Storm. All told, Israel lost 777 dead and 2,586 wounded,
which is proportionately double our losses in all the eight years of fighting in
Viet Nam.
Furthermore, the Arabs
attacked Israel again in 1973 during the so-called Yom Kippur War and ever since
in the vain hope of drinking Jewish blood and bringing about another Holocaust.
In this the Europeans are actively helping them only to find that every time
they appear to succeed they fail again.
Let us hope that the
haters and the enemies of Shem Yisborach will even now join the human community
and substitute for their ambition to kill and murder the ambition to imitate the
Jewish people who have given so much to the world. Even now the haters can
repent. Even now the killers can recognize that Jews are human also and that
love and kindness, not bloodshed and murder, serve all of us far better than
causeless hatred.
Shalom u’vracha.
