Left Wing Bigotry

Commentary by Dr. Gerhard Falk

Jewish Europe

There are approximately 1,700,000 Jews in Europe today. The estimates vary, alone because no one has ever been able to answer the question: “Who is a Jew?”

Europe has a population of 750 million, or 11% of the world’s population, so that the Jews of Europe would normally be invisible. In fact, the majority of Europeans have never seen a Jew.

Nevertheless, anti-Jewish demonstrations and hate are as common in Europe today as they were in the 20th century before, during, and since the Holocaust. In France, the home of 600,000 Jews, graffiti calling for the killing of Jews is found on the walls of buildings all over the country. Synagogues are regularly firebombed, as Jews are beaten in the streets, reminiscent of Hitler’s Germany.

Likewise, anti-Jewish demonstrations occurred throughout Europe during January. In Madrid, Spain, demonstrators took to the streets cursing Jews and the United States, encouraged by Spanish radio stations. These hate mongers equated the Star of David with the swastika and then threw stones as the Embassy of Israel. This although Spain has only 48,000 Jews in a population of 40 million. Likewise in Norway, with a Jewish population of only 1,500, anti-Jewish riots rivaled the demonstrations in London, England and almost all other European cities. In fact, the Jews in the United Kingdom are in as much danger today as were the German Jews shortly before the Nazi takeover in 1933.

The organizers and perpetrators of these atrocities are so-called “left-wing” politicians and their followers (The phrase “left wing” refers to the French parliament, where revolutionaries sat on the left side of the speaker’s platform and “conservatives” sat on the right side during the upheavals of 1789-1802).

It is evident in all the world’s countries, from Europe to South America and elsewhere in the world, that those who pretend to be “progressive” or “socialist” or “democrats” are also anti-Jewish. That is as true in the United States as it is in all other countries, such as Venezuela or Russia or Cuba.

In this country the Democrats represent the “left” and reflect the same anti-Jewish sentiment as elsewhere. Here are the facts:

Even as 78% of American Jewish voters voted for the Democrats in the last election, only 31% of Democrats sided with Israel in the latest effort to defend Israel against the Gaza terrorists. This means that 69% of Democrats favor the terrorists who call for the destruction of Israel.  Yet, 62% of Republicans back Israel, as discovered by the Rasmussen poll.

Democrats ran into the streets in recent weeks and with signs screaming “nuke Israel” and “kill the Jews”. No doubt only a few extremists used such language. More important are the results of public opinion polls taken over the last two years.

In 2006 all polls together revealed that 72 percent of Republicans but only 47 percent of Democrats sided with Israel or, conversely, a majority of Democrats support the Arab terrorists. Difference: 25%.

Another poll shows that 81 percent of Republicans but only 43 percent of Democrats sympathize more with Israel than the Arab nations, a difference of 38%.

In March of 2008 and again in December of that year 84 percent of Republicans but only 55 percent of Democrats viewed Israel as an ally of the United States , a difference of 29%.

The meaning of these differences is clear. The Democrat government, elected by Jews and financed by large Jewish contributions, will no doubt abandon the support of Israel as has been practiced by successive American administrations since 1948. The signs of this are already visible as George Mitchell, an Arab-American, has been assigned the special ambassador to the region with an agenda of promoting the interests of the Arabs. That interest is of course the destruction of Israel, if possible.

As the anti-Jewish agenda of the present administration develops there will be at least some Jews who will object to such a policy. That in turn will lead to the usual accusations of “double loyalty” against all Jews, including those who financed and voted for the Democrats. Like the German Jews of the 1920’s and the early 1930’s, the majority of the American Jewish community pretends that their vote and their money and their influence in the Democrat party will prevail. Nonsense. Jews are only 1.9% of the American population, so small a percentage that we really don’t make a difference except for the money the politicians can collect from us.

As for the Europeans, it is evident that the 1.6 million European Jews cannot stay there. Already many French Jews have moved to Israel and thereby defeat the haters as the population of Israel is increased by these migrants. Our natural population increase is now at zero. We are 13 million in a world of 6 billion and are not growing at all. It would therefore be in our interest to vote for those who support us. Instead we voted for those who seek to attack Israel, create a crisis for the American Jewish community, and abandon the principles on which our Constitution has rested these 224 years.

We Jews are our own enemies, as we confirm the words of Friedrich Hegel that “the only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history.”

Shalom u’vracha.
